The steam controller at first glance doesn't appear to be worse than using the analog sticks of traditional controllers (I would imagine it could be better in some ways) with the additional benefit of providing mouse emulation mode for games that actually are playable using a touch pad.

I am curious if Valve considered/tested something like a pointing stick variant. I was able to play Portal and Morrowind just fine on my laptop at the time using one, and think it can offer the familiarity of analog sticks but with much higher sensitivity and precision. Almost all modern fly-by-wire aircraft (especially fighters) use non-moving force-sensing control sticks instead of the displacement type with a lot of human factors research behind it to justify their use (so does the pointing stick).
