RE: update: EVE
This is called programmer design. It's when you let programmers decide what will happen instead of designers.
Look at any introductory programming language book. The first two chapters give you easily digestible information and fun little projects, usually Hello, World and Hello, World 2. You feel as though you're accomplishing something.
The third chapter gives you five incomprehensible concepts, three of which have no connection to what you've read before. The new project is designing a garage door opener app with GPS tracking.
See also Warcraft 3, whose third or fourth level was orders of magnitude harder than the previous ones (just like StarCraft 1, most turn-based strategy games, and everything else designed by programmers).
The only defense is to be a programmer. Don't go back to EVE until you can code that garage door opener app.
