The engine improvements alone should be reason enough to prefer the sequel- the first version of Lithtech was terrible, terrible garbage.
That article implies that they're only buying up trademark rights doesn't it? This typically means they're just going to re-release the titles in some capacity, probably for digital download of the big 3. Not necessarily that they're going to shop the license/do in-house development for a sequel.
