So after 16 years..
I finally finished Unreal.
Ok, it wasn't very fun. The enemy AI is the cheatingest bullshit ever, and the weapons pretty much suck shit. That makes for a bad combo. The game is also pretty long, and I just wanted to be over with it. I did use god mode on one of the last levels because it was way more annoying than enjoyable. Still better than Half Life. However, it seemed to hold up surprisingly well in terms of graphics. Yeah, obviously you can tell it's older, but it's not ugly. Good texture detail and lighting effects in the world and on models makes it definitely the best looking [FPS] game at the time. What I really liked was the software renderer, though. I didn't use it much because it still ran considerably crappier than D3D, but it had a better look, imo. Specifically the texture filtering which used a sort of dither instead of a blur which made it look gritty, and had the added affect of making the light/shadow borders crisper. I couldn't help but to think how well this rendering would have suited a proper sequel to Blood.
