RE: So after 16 years..
Oh yeah, how did I forget the music? Besides the kinda cheesy sounding percussion samples used, the arrangement and overall sound was excellent. It suited the game very well.
I'm not sure I understand what you meant by "Unfortunately, things that weren't drawn on a flat surface looked hilariously wrong -- dead bodies, chairs, places where one landscape plane joins another, etc.", Sim. I haven't noticed anything that particularly stood out as being bad, at least not by 1998 standards. Yeah, the geometry wasn't very detailed, but it wasn't really worse than other FPSes, at least not when you consider it had both open and closed spaces. I also don't think the level design was bad, though maybe a bit dull at times.
Oh, almost forgot: the animations were pretty crap, or at least they didn't coincide very well with enemy movement. It was like sprites, but in 3D.
As far as weapons go, the flak cannon was the best at taking baddies down, but you had to be right up in their face or else it did practically no damage, not to mention they would simply dodge incoming fire, which they would do against the 8-ball as well (oh, and I swear enemy rockets were faster). The ASMD was useful for when you actually wanted to hit something (the rifle was ok too), but still pathetically weak.
