I'm liking my Crucial SSD quite a lot so far. It makes quite a difference, though if you prefer to go with a bigger, more economical platter drive, it's not that important. The general wisdom is that 256gb is the minimum SSD you want to go with, as somehow they get faster as they get bigger. An extra 1tb (minimum) data drive is a common approach. I'm not a big fan of putting programs on a non-boot drive, but the cool kids like to put their OS and main games on the SSD and everything else on the metal drive. If it means anything, I have the OS and a billion Steam games on a 1tb drive, and it's just over half full, I think.

8gb of RAM should be plenty for a good while unless you do lots of photo/video work. You don't need super fast or fancy RAM -- just whatever your motherboard mfr recommends. I use plain old Crucial green sticks with no complaints. I don't think anyone overclocks RAM anymore. Just be sure to get a brand name and avoid no-name bulk stuff with prices too good to be true.
