TIE Fighter was excellent but is a game that really belongs to its era, as from a technical standpoint it has not aged well. X-Wing Alliance is still very much playable these days though, if you're willing to download some extra bytes in the form of mods.
FreeSpace 2 on the other hand, is twice as good today than it was at release thanks to the community. I also played through it not long ago and it's surprising how it has a better feel to it than any space opera simmer that's come out in the past 5 years. I suppose this is easy to explain as 99% of space sims in the past 5 years have come out of European dev houses that have a lot of heart but can't for the life of them code or design their ways out of a wet paper bag.
