Funny you should mention the graduate student slave. I recently got such a slave, but after years of not having one, I don't know what to do with him. After I chased him out of my office, he mostly hangs around in the dept. office watching youtubes. My chair is going to jump on me for not making him do something, so I have to come up with projects. It's hard thinking of slave work. We already have students who grade certain simple things, but I don't usually turn mine over to them because they mostly screw it up. What I should be doing with a graduate assistant is sending him off on research projects so he can get practice at that, but I would have to do something with the research he finds (ideally, collaborate on papers, etc.). That would mean writing and stuff, and I would rather go home and Swiffer my house.

Anyway, do you have any idea how hard it is to write a grant? I would rather apply for a sabbatical and use "professional development" money.
