From what I understand, it's one of those "multiplayer but not really" type deals. The way it's supposed to work is that newly discovered planets, systems and creatures are named after you and shared among the player base, there's also a race to see who can reach the center of the universe first, but you're never actually playing alongside anyone else, it's only just you and the AI.
They're using a 64 bit seed for procedural generation, meaning 18 quintillion variations. I'm left wondering what the probability is of any given person ever seeing someone else's discovery.
