RE: DAMN
here's what makes the game bad ass -
you get to form a shield wall with your men and slowly push against lines of archers
there hasnt been anything more bad ass than this in the history of video game
but if you really want to get technical, the history of rome as we know was created by some kind of 18-19th century rennisanse of pretentiousness, where everyone quite literally shat all over the reality of rome
its military was nothing like the armored disciplined men we think of today
nobody was marching in a line or any formation, there were no banners, only very few people had armor. nowhere near the percentage we think of today
the way people used to work back then was very different. the best way i could explain it is everyone sort of knew eachother. the system was based much more off a fundamental understanding of what to do, rather than receiving orders.
and the battles were no where near as large as we think
BUT
there *may* have been a time where much of how we do think of rome came into play, twords the end. maybe around trajan (which is what this game seems to spiritually connected to, in both aesthetics and spirit) he might have been the first to invent the massive military machine we know and use today
but literally, everything before that, hundreds, thousands of years was very primitive and basic. i think the roman military view we have is a mixture of trajan and perhaps something else. like a mash-up.. but mostly trajan
back in the day, people were amazed by sorcery, yes even in roman times. those who could produce art or contrapt a modern looking invention like some kind of gear box clock that would blow peoples minds is what won the crowd. it convinced people there was something special they would worship in the sense of liking/loving this person/device/concept/whatever it made them instinctively feel love in the way where they didnt want to kill such person and think of them as very special. this is a large part of the fundamental understanding of rulership (not military, that is a different story)
the mind was actually much more of an enforcer than the sword, and the sword would protect the divinity.
i can go on and on about this for days
