There needs to be a decentralization of gaming. I don't know how that would work... maybe like a Github for gaming assets, animations, sounds, etc but not of potato quality. Otherwise you'll just continue to see the classes divide between studios that pour millions into a game with teams of dozens/hundreds vs. a shitload of terrible Indie titles built by a team of 3 on a shoestring budget that get stale after 10 minutes.
Ultimately though, like any good art form, I feel like game development went from a passion to a job (and like any job, the goal is to make as much money as possible). Programing 8-bit pixels or animating sprites was a bit easier and less meticulous than creating something that appeals to today's Mt. Dew chugging market.
