Subject: RE: Skylake - yay?

An example from history:

Back in 1996, if you were on a Mac with a 33Mhz processor and you tried to use Microsoft Word 6.0, you had a terrible experience. You could get by, but you knew something was wrong.

If you used the Windows version of Word 6.0 with the first Pentium, everything was instantaneous -- scary fast.

Can this be attributed solely to the speed and efficiency of the Pentium? No. Word 6.0 for the Mac was one of the first ports. Instead of writing the Mac version more or less from the ground up, a la versions 4.0 and 5.0, version 6.0 was sloppily ported from Windows. It had to fight its way through badly ported code with every keystroke and mousedown.

I hope this illustrates the evils of porting and why we must never become complacent about it. Only you can prevent porta-potty software.
