why would you see a "light trail"? You generally don't see the beam unless there's something in the path of the light that scatters it. The atmosphere will do it to some extent, sure, but if the source is far away then you're unlikely to see any beam.

What's surprising about it being on mountains? That's pretty much where all the largest ground-based observatories are located.
