The reason why the term farming is used goes back all the way to the days of Ultima Online, where players with high cooking skill would literally tend fields of wheat for real life days, months or even years at a time, finally harvest them, cook them into lovely cupcakes, start a chain of stores to sell them and become rich and famous in the eyes of Sir Richard Garriott.
And this isn't even mentioning the cherry picking furor from the cherry farming sector that ensued after the cupcake barons arose, because as everybody knows: Where there's cupcakes, there must also be cherries.
