RE: I know what's missing
...and in other news, i managed to get siege of avalon to run properly by doing my own thing and not following the scarce advice on the internet
there is an official 1.4 patch which actually breaks the game, and is totally unnecessary
asside from setting compatibility options (dropping the color to 16bit and setting win95/98/Me) all you need to do is install the dx dev kit, then open the dx control panel and disable direct3d and disable hardware acceleration / use software rendering
this is not perfect, but it totally works and the game becomes playable rather than almost totally broken.
sometimes a dialog menu will lag for a brief second, and sometimes a black screen will flicker and cover the screen in black, which then needs to be wiped away with the mouse, but you can bypass this most of the time if you use keyboard keys to open the map and quest logs.
this is far more playable than running the unofficial patch or doing anything else.
the game actually is playable once you disable hardware acceleration
and i ran this all in vmware on a windows 10 guest, so the flicker can possibly be from the vm.
but my goal is to run this on direct hardware, so i can play in fullscreen and the thinkpad t420 is perfect for this.
the HD3000 is a totally non-retarded GPU compatible with everything, and im suprised with its capability, it will run source games on normal settings which is far more than i would have ever expected from it. with the t420 have the option running windows xp on it, with all the drivers.
i should probably do that some time, the t420 has this removable side bay where you can swap SATA drives and devices, and i have a ton of 2.5inch laptop hdds lying around all over the place
