Is that still the case when playing on whatever the hardest difficulty is? I've only tried the default setting so far.
The one and only time I've had to use potions is cat for caves, mostly because I couldn't find a gamma correction slider anywhere. In regards to combat, it seems potions and oils are indeed pointless when you can just roll, dodge or quen your way out of of everything.
