more things of practical concern
right now, there is an ultra high quality studio-grade digital audio converter for sale at $30
i originally purchased this PC usb audio interface for instruments, as an input to properly use my guitar with computer, i never expected to use this device as a full DAC for all audio output on PC.
one of the main appeals for an instrument interface for computers is ASIO support for windows (the osx version is called something different). these are basically special drivers which give compatible applications direct access to the audio hardware, with the intent of reducing total round trip DSP latency.
i already purchased a nice expensive creative x-fi pro usb audio device for this laptop because the onboard audio was hallow and shitty, and the creative x-fi made a very noticeable difference in sound quality to my speakers. but when i when i replaced the audio with this new audio interface for my guitar the difference was profound.
this is by far the best DAC i own. it's better than my PCIe SBZ i have installed on my desktop, which is already established to be the best DAC for the buck.
my new behringer uphoria UM2 audio interface kicks the fucking shit of both soundblaster X-fi and SBZ cards i have.
its the same DAC they use in their 1,000$ studio products.
when you really think about it, a DAC is something which should't be pricey anyway. its basically a pre-amp with some digital circuitry. and SMD circuitry is not fucking expensive.
but the DAC and AMP quality of this device is truly amazing. and it's only $30. amazing.
