If that was the case, they would have just charged $1k for them right off the bat. I don't think selling a few hundred units (if that) at that price is going to do anything for them anyway.

As for being stupid, well, considering I got a dev kit and soon a $600 hmd for $300, it's not such a bad deal. That is, if you're interested in VR at all.

As for the Vive, I think the two displays are the same as the ones in the Rift. Since they're not exactly commodity devices, my guess is that Oculus and and Valve had to pay (presumably Samsung) for development and tooling which will make up a substantial % of costs considering they're going to sell a combined million units if they're lucky. Valve's tracking system is really clever too - better than the system used on the Rift. Also, Valve includes motion tracked game pads. Once Oculus releases theirs, the total package price will probably be about the same between the two devices.
