I will be interested to hear about your Xeon experiment. I would be too askeered to explore that mysterious region.
Now, I don't know where you're getting the idea that the 4790k is not up to snuff. To me, it's a pretty dang uber processor. I seem to have gotten a good one, at least where the notorious heat problem is concerned.
