yes, picture an ion beam colliding with oxygen and producing terrestrial gamma ray bursts. this is actually what happens when lightning strikes. look this up.
does it get hot?
not really, the heat seems normal for enthusiast-class GPU hardware. i haven't noticed anything excessive.
