Very instructive. Though I wouldn't call the 290x "simple," I see what you're saying.
I keep reading that both Nvidia and AMD engage in certain questionable relationships with developers. Given the ferocious competition in this enthusiast niche, I can't say I'm surprised, but I rather doubt that all of this is verifiable. More like 10% true and 90% gaming forum imaginary cheerleading.
Anyhow, I have used good cards referenced by both companies. Right now, I just prefer Nvidia as they seem to have an edge in terms of products that just work with games. My recent misadventure with the R9 380 did not make a good impression. The 970 has been very well-behaved. That's all I'm saying. Also, the 970 is plenty of card for me. It eats whatever I feed it.
