Well, yeah. I had to update the mb BIOS to get the thing to work at all, but really it should have been fine after that. It had pretty good reviews as a low-mid range card selling for $200. I thought it might let me play FO4 with low/mid settings, which it did for minutes at a time before pooping out and generating driver error messages all over the place. The best drivers were some betas that came out right after the game shipped, but the uptime only marginally improved. Then there were some updated Crimson drivers that were supposed to open the heavens and make everything better, but that didn't happen.
I could probably have wasted a lot of time -- and probably some money -- chasing everything down, but I don't have the patience for that anymore.
So yes, maybe there was some PEBKAC in there somewhere. Don't know. Don't care. I'll put it this way: the 970 definitely works well with what I have; the 380 might work well but why would I bother with it? The 970 is superior. I suspect I could have just popped it into the old system and things would have been much improved.
