RE: Watchmen
Dr. Manhattan's origin could have been gotten out of the way with a two-minute blip early in the movie. The audience doesn't need to know that his dad taught him to repair watches, or when he met Janey, or the first time he slept with her, or any of that other noise. Hell, all it really needs is that shot of the TV interviewer introducing Manhattan. We can safely assume that the audience is at least somewhat familiar with the comic-book convention of scientific accidents granting superpowers; the actual details of the incident, although cool to see on the screen, are immaterial to the plot.
