You have to remember that people that HAVEN'T read the book have no fucking clue what Dr. Manhatten is. I think you pretty much have to have a back story on this character, to show his human state and how he came to be, and possibly why he is like he is after the accident. Besides, I think his origin story was shorter than I expected it to be. It felt like it was 15 minutes at the most.
