RE: Just installed the Auzentech forte soundcard..
If you can't tell direction properly out of a 5.1 speaker setup, you may want to try it on a bigger room or check your hardware to make sure it's doing proper positional 5.1 and is not just your receiver upmixing it, which is a common cause of most positional audio fuckups. Also keeping in mind that everyone tells front and back sound positioning differently, it's all in that ball of gray matter between your ears and not all brains are made the same.
That said, I can live without the surround, but I don't think I can go back to not having the subwoofer channel.
If you want AC3 through optical, look at sound card specs and make sure it supports Dolby Digital Live, which is what you want. Obviously, your receiver or speaker set must also support Dolby Digital decoding for this to work.
I use an Asus Xonar D2, which is a case of nice hardware marred by moronic Chinese software engineers. It has taken them 2 years to get the card where it's supposed to have been at retail.
