more owl stories
this owl definitely follows us at night
this time he was alone
he again strategically waited for us on the path, but this time it was in a much more confined space, or a 'trap zone' if you will.
i felt the breath of his wings this time
right as we came across this thick tree covered area near one of the entrances to the parking lot, this fucking creature swooped down and gave my dog a little love tap. there was no injury, i dont think he actually touched the dog, but it was very close.
this was a very startling encounter. its definitely huge. its the largest bird i have seen by volume, i can definitely confirm this now. yes, its larger than a california condor, i am not making this up. i read on wikipedia that the california sub species of great horned owl are supposedly the smaller of the species, but this might be total bullshit or there might be some exception to this or even might be another species. this creature is definitely extremely large.
after swooping down on my dog, who is an XXL beast, the owl swooped up to a low branch which was not 5 ft. away. i had my cell phone flashlight on at the time this occurred, because the entrance is filled with several flat-stone irregular stair cases in total pitch black of night. so the first thing i did was shine the light right to him and got a clear, very close up look.
he is much larger than i thought.
it really is the largest bird i have ever seen. easily.
but anyway, i think the reason he swooped on my dog was because the dog is fucking up his hunting ground.
my dog goes into hunting mode at night, its a very active state where he is constantly seeking other creatures out.
im sure this alone has some effect on the psychology of other animals. he is very good at what he does, although he knows i will never let him actually do anything.
but damn, this bird did not even care. he just landed on a nearby branch after making himself known like that. the dog was beyond pissed and already had his front legs on the tree. i shined the light on the owl, and for a brief moment i actually saw its face. i cant even describe it. its not something you have ever seen on TV or in books. its eyes were huge, but the presence of the creature is not like a bird. its utterly terrifying, i cant explain it. but its not like a bird.
so he did the exorcist thing with turning his head completely backwards when i shined this light on him and immediately flew off
i need to notify the LA audubon about this one.
see what they have to say about this.
