Stick with things you know something about, i.e. nothing. Most trucks/SUVs with locking hubs have transfer cases which have a 2WD mode. If you think drivetrain friction is negligible, go ahead and lift the front wheels in the air and chock one of them, and notice the difference in amount of effort needed to turn the free one with the lock engaged and disengaged. Generally, you lock the front hubs when you expect to be switching in and out of 4WD.

4WD, as opposed to AWD implies no center differential, and therefore using it in good grip conditions (like on dry pavement) places enormous stresses on the drivetrain and tires. If you routinely use 4WD in such cases, you WILL break something.
