christ you really are dumb

many 4x4 vehicles have a center diff. the center diff is to ease the torque which builds on axle/driveshaft in 4wd on high-traction surfaces such as asphalt.
but a center diff isn't AWD exclusive like you think it is.

and also, many manufactures apply the term 'locking' to the center diff now when describing their 4x4 systems. this is misleading because the front/rear diffs are the main concern with offroad traction, and are the main features of what actually make a vehicle capable offroad.

a 2wd vehicle with a full locking rear differential is more capable offroad than a 4wd or AWD vehicle with open diffs or most types of limited slips. the only real exception being jeeps vari-lok hydrolic differential driven by a hydraulic/gerotor pump.

fun fact- the vari-lok doesn't have a service kit and nobody knows the lifetime on the hydro LSD clutches.
they seem to last long, but there is an inevitable failure point with them
