I think time is the main differentiator that we don't have with current media. I don't think Birdman was bad, but I do acknowledge it got a lot of critical acclaim that may be slightly different if those same critics revisited it in another 5 years. Birdman had top notch art direction and cinematography. Nobody in it deserved a Best Actor Award (IMO), but the execution of it was pretty phenomenal.

I do think films like Fury Road or Whiplash will stand the test of time but yes... I 100% agree that some of the current films (see, SpotLight, American Hustle or The Big Short) are just Academy Award fodder that has no real heart behind it. Don't get me started on 12 Years a Slave (also known as, like this movie or you're racist... also, here's Brad Pitt!).

All that aside, there are still a lot of good movies coming out. 2016's summer has been really bad, but I can probably name just as many top notch movies that have come out in the last 5 years as I can from 50 years ago.
