It's a real shame about the phasing-out of the studio system and their wonderfully crafted sets. Pinewood and Shepperton in England held on for a long time. They may still occasionally rent out some of their sets -- I don't know. I do know that you can see the same "Pentonville" street set in several period movies, even some fairly recent ones.
Someone should do a documentary on some of the gigantic sets of the '30s and '40s (e.g., the one for The Hunchback of Notre Dame). Actually, I think Scorsese's Gangs of New York was done on a really big specially built set, but that's rare.
