You are right about RKO, of course. Huge in its time. Ruined by Hughes. It might still be around if David O. Selznick had stayed there -- who knows.
Nah. The only things remaining of the old studios are their names, which were retained for mysterious trade/tax purposes by the mega-corps. Sony probably has some good reasons for retaining the Columbia name, but they're beyond my comprehension. The studio system had a lot of faults, but they did more things right than wrong. Too bad they were wrecked by giant packs of foreigners and Howard Hughes wannabes.
