And it's not quite Dark Souls difficult but the game will kill you... lots. The fact that you can technically B-Line to the end boss 10 minutes after the game starts makes all side and primary quests completely optional... which has some weird psychological effect that makes you want to wander endlessly completing quests because you want to, not because you have to.
