Always go with ballistics over energy weapons in a Fallout game.
Always go with small arms over big guns.
In NV, you need to be able to repair things.
In just about all RPG games, you'll get rich with time, or you eventually won't need much money. If you have to choose between Barter and Speech, go with Speech. (semi-spoiler: you'll be glad you did if you're up against the Legion at the very end.)
Sniper / Sneak characters are always inflict more fatalities than bruiser flail-abouts. (semi-spoiler: if you find the deathclaw colony, you'll be glad you went sniper/sneak.)
