There was a time when radiator fans were driven directly off the engine [belts] on everything. When it comes to big engines with substantial cooling requirements, it makes sense to power the fans that way since it would otherwise require beefy electric motors to drive them, along with enlarged alternators. Ford didn't do it because it was better, but rather because it was more practical and cheaper.
