Subject: Why I'm now using mods

1. Because I'm inconsistent and untrustworthy. But not very.

2. Because I long ago finished the game and built marvelous things without a single mod. I have all the meaningful achievements. I deserve to use mods if I want to.

3. Because Bethesda made some weird design choices. Also, the DLC items are pretty weak. I see this more clearly now that I'm a master settlement builder.

As an example:

Right now, I'm working on the Boston Airport. As you probably know, this property is occupied by the Brotherhood of Steel, but there's an open area adjacent to the terminal building where you build a contraption as part of the main story finale (assuming you're on friendly terms with the Minutemen and the Brohood). For this project, you get a workshop, but you can't install a settler recruitment beacon and the ground doesn't support much food or water. In spite of these problems, the airport still counts as a settlement for some reason. You can send provisioners there, so the only thing I can figure out is that Bethesda intended this to be a potential player home.

Well, thanks to some carefully selected mods, I see a way to overcome these issues. I am now constructing a fortress and intend to occupy it with Brohood "settlers." It's quite large, as I intend to enclose most of the ground and use modded planters to grow crops inside, possibly with some kind of solarium or special lighting. The water problem will be overcome by some wonderful modded condenser units.

These items, by the way, are courtesy of the same mod -- Unlocked Settlement Objects, which was originally designed for the PS4 but has gained considerable popularity on the PC and Xbox. The same mod will let me spawn regular settlers or Brohood NPC's. The NPC's count against the population limit but don't have to farm. The settlers are just normal settlers, so they do have to farm. Also, they come dressed in normal settler rags, so I would have to scrounge for Brohood uniforms, which is not the case with the NPC's. I'm not sure which type I'll use. Much will depend on what I can do with crops and how many Brohood uniforms I can buy or otherwise obtain without killing Bros.

I'm very excited about this because it sort of reminds me of figuring things out in Morrowind. The circumstances are completely different, what with mods and all, but the feeling is very similar.

One last thing: Since the skybox is very high at the airport, I can make a really tall fortress, with lots of accoutrements and doodads. This should occupy me for a while. It may be my most ambitious undertaking to date. When I get something presentable, I'll have a report with screenshots (in color and taken in the game as things happen -- no CGI trickery).
