Yeah. Again not uncommon. I don't know what gear set you're talking about. Just something like a temperature dependent spring, similar to the springs in old mercury switch thermostats, that effects the coupling. Unnecessarily having the fan constantly spinning would be stupid, hence the clutch.
Yeah, its a pretty good system, but it's not unique to ford at all.
