Hey, remember when I said that settlers wouldn't use the adjacent swampy neighborhood? I was wrong.

The settlement is populating very slowly. I have two people so far, both of whom are behaving correctly. The first one had to be assigned to a job, but the second one automatically started farming. Both automatically assigned themselves to beds. Both are correctly following a typical settler schedule. One uses the crafting stations and sits around in a little communal area during her leisure time. The other one (insert untranslatable Donald Duck rage-quacking here) . . . the other one likes to stroll over to the swampy, ghoul-infested neighborhood and stand around chest-deep in filthy water.

So far, I don't think she's attracted the ghouls' attention. My experience with ghouls has been that they spend much of their time asleep or in some kind of somnambular state. But this is luck. It's only a matter of time before she fuddles over there and gets attacked.

The ghouls probably won't do much harm. She's armed with an automatic assault rifle and can pretty easily kill your typical low-rent ghoul. What I worry about is my turrets not discriminating very well between enemy and friendly targets. Settlers are pretty much immortal, but that's because enemies will stop attacking them when they fall down. Turrets will attack enemies until they're dead, and I'm not sure how much splash damage settlers can withstand.

This matters because my experiment could be jeopardized if enough dumb settlers get wasted by rocket and laser fire. I could build a fence to keep the settlers in, but this would only cause the ghouls and other enemies to spawn in my carrot farm or some other undesirable place.

The lesson here is that one should never underestimate the stupidity of Bethesda NPCs.
