The original Overboard makes some primitive conscious suggestions about sexism, but these get swept under the (unconscious?) message that true happiness resides in becoming a traditional hausfrau in service to a crowd of males. Then again, I have to wonder how unconflicted this ending is. Does the movie want people to talk about the Goldie character's outcome? Am I treating a Hollywood money-grab like an Ibsen play? Could be.
The Ghostbusters remake correctly (imo) stays away from feminist subtexting, allegorizing, etc. to emphasize funny characterization. It does, however, do some amusing things with Chris Hemsworth's character as an answer to the stock dopey bimbo who gets away with incompetence because, you know, sexism.
