Back to M&B Warband
I took it for granted that I kept an old save with my monster character, but I didn't. So I had to start over.
It's not too bad, though. I've found all my preferred companions -- Jeremus, Deshavi, Lezalit, and Katrin. Each serves a unique function in terms of boosting party skills, though it's early days yet, so they haven't quite become my dream team. I also added Klethi because I had a hard time finding Deshavi. As you may know, Klethi is the poor man's Deshavi. Now I'm reluctant to get rid of her because she's become quite the investment.
Meanwhile, I've done a serviceable job of assembling a small but elite force consisting mostly of knights and Vaegir marksmen. I've thrown in some Nord warriors, who are very slowly developing into Huscarls.
As I have no castles or towns yet, and as I still haven't been able to invest in businesses, there's no point in having a lot of foot soldiers. These units are mainly used for garrisoning, and I have no garrisons. Even so, I'm a little worried because knights are rubbish in sieges. When I join a faction, I know the marshal will want me to show up as fodder for every assault, and I am not at the point where I can afford to lose elite investments.
To offset this, I'm giving my companions Trainer points whenever possible and trying to squirrel away as much money as I can. I'm going after sea raiders far more aggressively than I would in mid- or late-game, just for the cash. I would say that my budget is all right at present, but I must not relax. This is to say that I must keep gear and exotic horse purchases to a bare minimum. I could technically afford a hunter or charger, but I'm riding a so-so courser. I'm still using found armor with no gloves and a mediocre saber. No regrets. This is what I should be doing. This is how you grow a proper company under arms.
I will try to put off joining a faction as long as I can, but I'll have to at some point. Friends, keep me in your minds and hearts.
