Some people don't put much stock in hero companions, but I swear by them. Apart from their valuable party skills, they're very handy when your company gets into the hundreds and you're having to garrison most of your soldiers. Since the companions are mounted and very powerful, you can go around with a party of five and wipe out huge swarms of bandits. This saves/generates money and keeps Morale high when a big party would be a drain in between fights. (Also, not even steppe bandits can outrun a mounted companion group.)
