I've managed to find better gear for my companions. Some is new; some is battered or rusty, but the protection is better than sea raider armor. They also have good weapons and horses -- everyone has at least a heavy courser; some have hunters and steppe chargers. I'm using a steppe charger and finally bought a morning star for myself.
The horses are helpful, even when we have to dismount them in fights with the Khergits. They tend to stand around the party and make things difficult for charging lancers.
The poor Khergits don't know how to cope with an enemy who won't chase them. They'll circle as long as they can. This is a little nerve-wracking until they run out of arrows. Then they have no choice but to charge right into our wall of knights, huscarls, and Vaegir marksmen. Of course, they just shatter. Too bad we can't run after the routed ones.
