I think I may be imbalancing the game and causing all this weird party disparity. I can beat practically anything with 74 knights an 6 companions. Enemy parties even in the 150-250 range are nothing. Also, I bear down on enemies relentlessly, giving them no rest. The only thing I don't do is loot villages or caravans. Eventually, the enemies have very ragtag parties that can't regroup because of my persecution. Maybe this leads to more or less secluded kings trying to make up for things by amassing huge numbers. Practically all the armies I attack end up with a bunch of weak ducklings and a freakishly large mother duck. Only my king -- Yargolek -- has a normal-size royal party.
I think my cavalry may be a plague that is stunting the proper growth of Fake Medieval Europe.
