RE: Alfred Hitchcock is not the master of suspense
I like North by Northwest. It was the best version of the 39 Steps and I think it influenced the James Bond films. I wasn't convinced with the Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint romance part. Eva had more chemistry with Marlon Brando on On The Waterfront.
Frenchman Henri-Georges Clouzot is a director whose films I would recommend. He's been, at one time, compared to Hitchcock for his use of suspense. Not as prolific as his Hitch, but his stories were more complex and his characters more three-dimensional. Wages of Fear is his masterpiece.
