To your point on romance, I think he established suspense by making the viewer actually care about the characters, did he not? It's not that there aren't others that can do that better since him, but he undeniably influenced those who came after him and helped to evolve the genre of the "Thriller".

I hate to use Psycho as the example since that's one of his best, but look at Janet Leigh's character. You spend the first third of the movie following who you assume is the traditional femme fatale and becoming emotionally invested in her story, only to have her knife raped in the shower unexpectedly. He totally George R.R. Martin'ed that shit.

It's hard not to recognize his contributions to the Thriller and Noir in general. I don't think his title should lessen until somebody contributes to or bends the genre like he did. That's like saying Stephen King isn't the master of horror even though he's put out sheer garbage for the last 20 years. He helped define literary horror even if others may have comparable or superior works.
