Not sure about where you are now, but in the U.S. we have this hilariously mis-named thing called Financial Aid. Students borrow money from government or private entities and then get charged interest that would make the Mafia blush. Essentially, they turn a $20,000 loan into a $50,000 one with magic, vaguely legal shell games. If you default, they pack on more interest. If you default really badly, none of the normal consumer protections apply. Collectors retained by the Dept. of Education can harass you into the ground, garnish wages, and basically do whatever they want. All by way of saying that it's better to pay as you go, if possible.
