I didn't did do it
I had been debating about upgrading or buying a new desktop for a little while now, and with minimal researching I pulled the trigger yesterday. I had almost gone with some Dell that had an AMD 1700X, 8GB, 1TB, AMD 570 for $700 which appeared to be a pretty decent deal.. But I couldn't do it. I knew it had RAM on the slower side (also, why are there a billion goddamn DDR4 speeds?), and I didn't know how many channels they populated. It was hard for me to justify that kind of money on a machine I was only partially satisfied with hardware wise while being unsure about its upgrade prospects.
So instead I bought some parts. Not everything because I'm not yet sure how much I'll scavenge from my current machine. AMD 2600, ASS-ROCK ATX MB, 16GB, 100-something GB SSD (it was free with proc) for like $450. I'll throw in my GTX660 in the mean time in hopes that GPUs will come down to sane levels soonish. PSU should be fine since the new CPU is 65W vs 95W for the old one. But at the same time I'd kind of hate to gut this machine because despite it being so old, it runs pretty damn good for most standard uses.
