I might have just gotten lucky, but the freebie motherboard I'm currently using has pretty much been trouble-free. I didn't opt for the cheapest, but it was still pretty cheap. The reviews were also pretty good overall.
Two reasons to go with 16GB: I didn't want the hassle down the road with adding 2 more DIMMs and having compatibility issues. The other is that I run OpenFOAM CFD simulations and meshes on my project are growing.
