RE: Moar thoughts on Fallout 76
The more I think about it, the more I feel like Bethesda was in a "damned if they do, damned if they don't" situation.
In the span of just over 5 years or so they put out FO3, New Vegas, and FO4. To repeat the formula with a generic FO5 was going to result in a lot of fans bitching and moaning about them milking the franchise dry and never trying anything new. From a hardware perspective, consoles and video cards aren't in a place where they can completely overhaul the engine and graphics for current-gen without fragmenting the consumers who can or cannot play it. FO76 seems like the last foray of this generation to make one last cash grab using a dying hybrid monstrosity of an engine.
I think it's the natural next step to utilize as much of their existing assets and work as possible to try something new from a mechanics standpoint. I'm sure it'll be met with mass complaints until the servers are inevitably full of trolls or grievers creating a sea of toxicity... but in a beautiful way that's what the FO universe is meant to feel like.
I do think there will be a bigger, badder, true successor to the FO franchise when they put out a true FO5 for the next-gen audience. 76 definitely seems more like an experimental one time thing to bide our time until we get there. I hope
