I won't revisit my HL rants. Suffice to say that HL was up against SIN and Blood 2, both of which were unfinished buggy messes, but otherwise just as ambitious as HL. My analogy in the past was Kristi Yamaguchi winning Olympic gold because she fell down less often than everyone else. Ultimately, though, HL became a big deal because of Valve's preemptive gaming press massaging, made possible by lots of Microsoft money.
SHOGO was kind of cool. It just needed more robots and less hallway/vent shootiness.
