For what it's worth, I thought HL2 was a much better game than HL1. It had some well-designed ingredients. The gravity gun, by today's standards, is a little dopey, but Valve spent a lot of time making sure that the physics would behave as advertised in the puzzles. Some other things were impressive, imo.
HL1 was overrated. HL2 was better but not earth-shattering. What I'm apt to overlook in all this is how exceptionally good Valve is as a game studio. You may not like their stuff, but you can believe that it was tested, re-tested, and tested again. Then it was play-tested with real players. Then the tests were tested. They put out finished products.
